Docket G-12: when MES genealogy breaks, containment is paperwork theater

Parent-child lot links, rework forks, and hold-release stamps decide whether scrap is containable—plant traceability docket, not batch-record ISA-88 how-tos, not digital product passports, not battery passport marketing.

Docket G-12: when MES genealogy breaks, containment is paperwork theater

Docket: G-12
Plant: discrete + batch hybrid (anonymized)
Charge: Genealogy discontinuity after rework — false “all clear” on customer shipment
Format: Exhibit list. Not a tutorial.

Exhibit A — The parent that vanished

Lot P-8841 split into rework child R-8841-A. MES screen showed child complete. Parent row retained status CLOSED without a bidirectional link. Shipping used parent barcode still on the tote.

Finding: Containment queried the child. Warehouse moved the parent.

MES genealogy screen with broken parent-child link

A one-way link is not genealogy. It is a rumor with a UI.

Exhibit B — Hold stamp without genealogy scope

Quality placed a hold on R-8841-A for torque fails. Hold scope field: “lot.” System interpreted “this lot ID only,” not “all material sharing wafer/batch origin.”

Finding: Hold language was English. Scope was software.

Exhibit C — Manual override chat

Supervisor chat: “ship the good ones from the tote.” No MES transaction. No split. No new IDs. Three units left with parent label, two with child label, same tote.

Finding: Chat is not an MES API.

Exhibit D — Customer RMA

RMA returned a unit with parent label, torque signature matching the held child population. Customer packet included our CoC referencing genealogy “intact.”

Finding: CoC lied because genealogy lied.

Stipulated facts (agreed by operations + quality)

  1. Rework must create child IDs and reverse links before any physical split.
  2. Hold scope must enumerate genealogy closure (siblings, parents, prior merges).
  3. Shipping scan must reject mixed-label totes.
  4. CoC generation blocked if open holds exist anywhere in the closure.

Remedies ordered

| # | Remedy | Owner | Due | | --- | --- | --- | --- | | 1 | Bidirectional genealogy hard-stop on rework complete | MES | 14d | | 2 | Hold scope picker: ID / closure / process-order | Quality IT | 21d | | 3 | Shipping scan rule: one genealogy root per tote | Warehouse | 7d | | 4 | CoC job reads closure, not single ID | Quality | 14d |

What this docket refuses to be

ISA-88 batch recipe education. ESPR digital product passport essays. Battery passport vendor stories. Those documents do not repair a missing reverse link at 02:00.

Shipping tote with mixed parent and rework labels

If two label families share a tote, genealogy already failed.

Closing entry

Docket G-12 is sustained. Genealogy is a graph with enforcement—or shipping will keep inventing fiction that quality stamps.
