06:40 — Superheat high alarm on the process header. Operator opens spray. Temperature drops. Alarm clears. Shift notes: “attemperator hunting; watch it.”
09:15 — Same header. Temperature looks stable on the HMI. Field walk finds the spray valve cycling hard. Drain pot downstream is warmer than the drawing expected. Someone wonders about wet steam.
14:50 — Turbine trip on high exhaust moisture after a load swing. Investigation: control thermocouple in a poorly mixed zone, nozzle partially plugged, and a spray-water strainer that had not been cleaned since the last outage sticker.
Steam-trap programs own condensate loss on distribution. Deaerator briefs own feedwater oxygen. Orifice erosion owns primary-element wear on steam measurement. This diary owns the spray attemperator / desuperheater as the device that turns water into temperature—when mixing and sensing are honest.
What the control loop is asking for
Spray water must atomize, mix, and evaporate before the control sensor. A thermowell that sits in a stratified stream will command more water than the bulk needs, or less. A plugged nozzle pattern that still shows valve position will deliver jets instead of fog. A slow sensor will invent oscillation that operators “solve” by widening deadband until metal temperature already moved.

Evidence that belongs on the traveler
- As-found nozzle inspection and strainer differential—not only valve stroke tests.
- Sensor location vs mixing length on the P&ID, verified in the field after any spool change.
- Spray-water quality and temperature: cold, dirty water grows nozzle plugs and thermal shock stories.
- Trend of valve travel versus steam flow and outlet temperature—hunting is a diagnosis, not a personality.
Do not file “temperature control OK” because the PV sat near setpoint during steady load. Prove the loop through a planned load change with recorded spray demand and no unexplained drain heat.
The boiler makes steam. The attemperator decides whether the header receives steam or a weather report from a lonely thermowell.
