In 2026, cybersecurity for manufacturing is increasingly framed as a production and safety program, not a checkbox on an IT project plan. Frameworks such as IEC 62443 and NIST guidance for industrial control systems are used to structure zones, conduits, and access control rather than relying on a single perimeter firewall.

Where risk concentrates

  • IT/OT convergence — Remote access, cloud analytics, and shared identity systems blur old air gaps.
  • Vendor remote support — Persistent tunnels into cells and lines remain a common weak point.
  • Facility systems — Cooling, power, and building controls can affect both uptime and physical safety when tied into plant networks.

What mature programs do differently

They inventory assets, segment networks, prefer passive monitoring that understands industrial protocols, and define incident response that includes safe shutdown and manual overrides. Change control for PLC logic and robot firmware is treated with the same seriousness as product quality changes.

AI and agentic tools on the floor raise the stakes further: an agent that can write setpoints or open work orders needs guardrails, audit trails, and least-privilege design—or it becomes an amplifier for mistakes and attacks.
