Plant floors still run a museum of fieldbuses—each optimized for the controller family that paid for it. OPC UA FX (Field eXchange) is the open attempt to replace that fragmentation with vendor-independent controller and device communications, often riding deterministic Ethernet / TSN underneath.
Mid-2026 shifted the conversation from “is FX real?” to “how do we migrate?” Siemens, Rockwell, Beckhoff, Phoenix Contact, B&R and peers have been shipping or piloting controller-to-controller profiles, with controller-to-device following as switch ecosystems mature.
What FX is meant to buy
- Multi-vendor cells — Controllers exchange data without a proprietary backbone tax.
- Sensor-to-cloud continuity — One information model from field to MES and beyond.
- Safer brownfield paths — Gateway-led C2C between cells while inner buses wait for refresh cycles.
What projects still get wrong
FX is not a forklift upgrade. Motion islands may keep EtherCAT or similar while FX coordinates at the cell boundary. TSN profiles, certificates, and companion specs must match—or “open” becomes another incompatible dialect. Skills sit between OT and IT: identity, PubSub security, and change control for connection models.
FX also does not replace application logic. It standardizes how automation components talk; engineers still design the process.
