Industry discussions increasingly describe a stack where MES runs the floor, QMS governs nonconformance and release, ERP owns cost and order truth, and an IIoT/namespace layer distributes live events. AI sits on top of that structure; it does not replace it.

Why point solutions fail on the floor

  • Stale data — Lakes and historians fill up while decisions still wait for shift reports.

Agentic manufacturing narratives are rising: systems that sense, decide, and act on shop-floor events. Those agents still need trustworthy execution context from MES and QMS. Without traceability and state, autonomy is theater.

  2. AI used as a translator across messy IT/OT schemas—measured by decision latency, not demos.
  3. Cyber and change-control discipline as plants connect more OT surfaces.

Plant software wins when it disappears into reliable flow: order in, conforming product out, with a clean audit trail. That is an execution architecture problem—not a single-app purchase.
