What still fails audits in specialty chemical, pharma-adjacent, and food batch plants is the recipe itself: paper batch records, tribal deviations, and procedural steps that never matched the actual charge.
ISA-88-style electronic batch records and recipe procedural control are becoming living execution systems—phase logic, material genealogy, and exception workflows bound to the batch ID.
The industrial point is a released batch with defensible history. An EBR that operators bypass with sticky notes is a digital filing cabinet.

What still fails
Paper-to-PDF conversions labeled “electronic.” Systems that duplicate MES without owning recipe phase state. This is not DPP/ESPR product passport reporting, not MTP skid packaging, not ISA-18.2 alarm rationalization, and not generic MES order orchestration alone.
What to watch next
- Sites that cut batch release cycle time without raising deviation escapes.
- Whether regulators treat EBR exception trails as primary evidence.
- Recipe version control that survives scale-up across sister trains.
MES knows the order. EBR proves the batch was made as written—or documents exactly when it was not.
