Battery passports were the first industrial shock. Under the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR), digital product passports (DPPs) are widening to more categories—electronics, textiles, and other regulated groups as delegated acts land. For plants, the message is the same: market access will require machine-readable proof of what was built, from which materials, with which repair and footprint attributes.
That is a plant-systems problem. ERP item masters and quality PDFs will not answer a customs or customer API. Serialization, BOM accuracy, supplier declarations, and carbon factors must be produced in the flow—not reconstructed by a compliance team after ship.

- Change control — Engineering changes update the passport, not a stale file share.
What programs underestimate
Multi-tier supplier readiness outside the EU. Mapping plant MES events to passport data models. Keeping repair and spare information accurate for products that live a decade. Cyber exposure when product graphs become publicly queryable.
DPPs also amplify existing master-data debt. If the BOM is wrong today, the passport will be wrong at scale tomorrow.
