Digital battery passport frameworks and customer traceability clauses require serialized genealogy—materials, process steps, test results, and increasingly carbon and due-diligence data—available on demand.
That turns data architecture into plant infrastructure. A PDF batch record will not satisfy a passport query at the border or a recall drill. MES, QMS, LIMS, and warehouse systems must share a single product story from electrode slurry to pack ship.
What passport-ready plants actually build
- Serialization at every value-add step — Not only at final pack.
- Material lot binding — Cathode, anode, electrolyte, and separator lots tied to each unit.
- Exportable records — APIs and documents that survive supplier and country handoffs.
What programs underestimate
Master data quality across contract manufacturers. Retrofitting brownfield lines that never serialized intermediates. Cyber and access control when passport data leaves the plant. And the cost of capturing carbon and chain-of-custody fields that production teams never owned before.
Traceability without process control is theater. The same sensors and SPC that raise yield become the evidence layer the passport needs.
