AI campuses need firm megawatts around the clock. Renewable PPAs help on energy certificates, but training and inference loads still demand baseload-quality capacity. That is why small modular reactors (SMRs) have moved from speculative slides into active siting and partnership discussions with hyperscalers and chip vendors.

The pitch is clear: carbon-free firm power, modular build-out, and—in some designs—closer co-location with compute to reduce dependence on congested transmission. The execution reality is harder.

What SMRs are meant to solve

  • Interconnection delay — Large new loads can wait years in regional queues; behind-the-meter or co-located generation is marketed as a way to de-risk energization dates.
  • 24/7 AI duty cycle — Clusters do not sleep when the wind drops.
  • Water and cooling constraints — Some advanced reactor and cooling pairings emphasize lower water intensity for arid sites.

What still gates the calendar

Licensing, HALEU and other fuel supply, community acceptance, insurance, and grid interconnection studies for hybrid campuses often dominate the critical path. Even “on-site” reactors typically remain grid-tied for backup and export. Bundled load-plus-generation filings can look like two queue entries unless carefully structured.

Announced collaborations—including advanced nuclear pilots tied to AI data-center concepts—signal intent. Commercial delivery at campus scale is still measured in years, not quarters.

What to watch next

  1. Which projects clear licensing and fuel milestones versus which remain MOUs.
  2. PPA and financing structures that allocate nuclear schedule risk between reactor vendors and compute operators.
  3. Whether SMR campuses become grid-stabilizing anchors or fragile islands during regional outages.

For AI infrastructure, energy strategy is now part of the product plan. SMRs are one firm-power option—but only the projects that survive regulation and interconnection will matter.
