Utilities and heavy industrials spent years learning that oil-filled transformers can talk through DGA and, increasingly, through online partial discharge. The same physics lives in a less glamorous place: medium-voltage cable joints and terminations—where workmanship, moisture, and accessory voids create PD long before a feeder announces itself as a blackout.
Transformer online-PD briefs own tank sensors and interference rejection on iron. Arc-flash studies own incident energy after electrification. This brief owns the cable accessories that sit in basements, tunnels, and outdoor pits—and that plants still treat as “install and forget.”
Why joints are the weak sentence in a feeder story
A new MV cable run can be excellent. The joint is where human process meets polymer and field stress. Typical industrial failure patterns:
- Voids and knife cuts from rushed prep.
- Moisture ingress after incomplete sealing.
- Wrong accessory kit for cable construction.
- Thermal cycling that opens what looked perfect at commissioning.
Offline PD or withstand tests at energization catch some of this. They do not watch the joint age through load, weather, and vibration for the next decade.

Commissioning green is not a life certificate for a joint.
What online joint PD is for
Continuous or frequent PD monitoring on critical joints and terminations aims to:
- Catch rising discharge activity before insulation carbonizes into a fault.
- Prioritize which accessories deserve excavation or outage—not every joint on a rumor.
- Correlate PD with load and temperature so “noise” and “growth” are separable.
It is not a substitute for competent jointers. It is a way to stop treating accessories as invisible until the feeder trips.

Sensors without a disposition path are another ignored trend.
A practical plant rule set
| Rule | Reason | | --- | --- | | Rank joints by consequence (main feeders, single-radial process) | You cannot instrument everything on day one | | Record jointer ID, kit lot, and humidity at install | Genealogy for accessories is as real as MES for parts | | Baseline PD after energization, then trend | Absolute numbers without baseline invite panic or complacency | | Tie rising PD to planned outage tickets | Monitoring without outage authority is theater |

Basements full of terminations are a reliability asset class—name an owner.
