- Changeover speed — Flexible cells must reconfigure without week-long downtime.
- MES / QMS / ERP integration — Robots that cannot exchange work orders, quality data, and genealogy records stay isolated experiments.
- Safety and standards — Collaborative and fenced systems both need clear risk assessment and validated procedures.
Software is part of the machine
The arm is only one layer. Vision models, scheduling logic, digital twins for commissioning, and maintenance telemetry increasingly determine whether a cell scales. Plants are buying an operations stack, not a standalone manipulator.
That is why system integrators and software platforms sit at the center of successful deployments. Hardware differentiation still exists, but orchestration decides whether a pilot becomes a standard cell across five factories.
