The fan still turns while water, wear metals, and wrong viscosity collect in the gearbox. Vibration may arrive late. Oil analysis and level checks arrive earlier—if someone owns the ladder climb.

Cooling-tower chemistry programs get attention when conductivity drifts. The fan drive above the stack gets less. Gearboxes for induced-draft fans live in heat, moisture, and sometimes spray carryover. They are also inconvenient to sample. That combination produces a familiar pattern: the tower still rejects heat, the fan still spins, and the gearbox oil has been water-cut or metal-loaded for months.

What to sample for

Routine oil analysis for these drives usually watches water content, viscosity, and wear metals (iron, copper, and related alloys depending on the gear set). A rising water trend without a corresponding leak story often means breathers or seals are admitting humid air—or washdown/spray is finding a path. Viscosity that drops may mean wrong top-up oil, not “lighter duty.”

Cadence that survives real plants

OEM intervals vary. A practical frame many sites can defend:

I would not invent one universal ppm water limit for every gearbox model. Use the maker’s guidance and trend your own baselines. A single “normal” lab report after years of silence is weak comfort.

Why vibration alone is late

Gear damage and bearing wear often announce in the oil before the overall vibration alarm looks dramatic—especially when the fan load masks early mesh problems. If the only PdM on the tower is a quarterly vibration route that skips the climb in bad weather, the oil program is doing work the accelerometer never sees.

Put the sample points and last results in the same system as the water-treatment logs. Heat rejection is a plant utility; the fan drive is part of that utility, not a roof ornament.
