Autonomous mobile robots (AMRs) are moving material inside plants and warehouses with less fixed infrastructure than classic AGV tracks. The newer wave depends on machine vision and edge AI: cameras and depth sensors feed models that run on the vehicle so navigation, obstacle avoidance, and pallet pose estimation do not wait on the cloud.

That architecture matters on a live floor. Cloud round-trips fail under jitter, bandwidth limits, or coverage gaps. Sub-second safety responses require local inference on ruggedized compute—often fanless industrial modules designed for vibration and temperature.

What buyers evaluate now

  • Perception robustness — Lighting changes, reflective surfaces, mixed pallet types, and people in shared aisles.
  • Fleet orchestration — Traffic rules, charging, and task assignment across dozens of units without deadlocks.
  • Integration — WMS/MES handoffs so moves are work orders, not orphaned missions.
  • Safety case — Detect, slow, stop—validated procedures, not demo videos.

Where value shows up

AMRs reduce non-value travel time and can absorb labor shortages in intralogistics. Some deployments add inspection or identification during transport, collapsing separate process steps. The economic case still hinges on uptime, map maintenance, and how quickly a site can reconfigure flows when the line changes.

  2. 3D vision for reliable pallet and rack interaction in mixed SKUs.
  3. Whether “inspection while moving” becomes a standard cell or stays a niche add-on.
